Unniappam – Chemeen (Shrimp Balls)

Don’t be alarmed when you hear chemeen unniappam! It’s absolutely not a sweet item. It’s so called just for the shape; but trust me…you will like chemeen unniappam more than the regular unniappam!

Unniappam – Chemeen (Shrimps Balls)

250 gms chemeen
½ tsp turmeric powder
½ tsp pepper powder
Salt

1 large onion chopped fine
1 tbsp ginger finely chopped
6 green chilies chopped fine
3 sprigs curry leaves chopped
½ tsp pepper powder
3 large eggs

Method:
Clean shrimps and squeeze out water.
Cook the shrimps with turmeric powder, pepper powder and salt and till dry. Let it cool.
Mince coarsely in a grinder.
Saute onions, ginger, curry leaves and green chilies till onions are almost brown.
Add minced shrimps and stir for a few minutes. Transfer to a bowl and let it cool.
Add beaten egg and mix well. Add pepper powder and check salt.
Heat “appa chatti” (non stick preferable) and wipe with an oiled tissue or cloth. (No need to add oil)
Place a tablespoon of the mixture into each cup.

When the sides start to brown, carefully flip using 2 spoons. Brown all sides.

Serve warm or cold with tomato ketchup.
